He played at the University of Kansas when I was a student there. I remember him having freakish lip slurs and intonation to die for.

Al, 2 other tpt. players, and I shared a house when we were students at Eastman. I still remember trying to light a fire in the fireplace and hearing him doing lip slurs. I thought it was 2 tpts. playing, so I went upstairs to his bedroom to check it out. There Al was, sitting on his bed, with his feet up, reading the newspaper on a music stand, while doing lip slurs at an amazing speed. I've never heard anything like it since. Al was the only brass player in the history of Eastman to receive an artist diploma. His graduation recital was truly amazing too!
