I tried a couple of new ones some 10 years ago before I got the Willson.
They blew very well with a big sound but the differences between the two instruments were like chalk/cheese. One had great valves but was not as responsive, the other was the reverse, valves were dreadful but it blew ok.
You need to play this one first!
Good luck,
CB

I have played a Sterling for the past 5 years, and I really like it. The bell is very high in copper content, so VERY soft. It is also VERY responsive. The whole horn vibrates with every note. This is really strange the first time you hold it and feel the sound all through the horn. Really big, dark sound as well. I did have the second valve slide shortened (as have several others I have spoken to) but otherwise, intonation is what you would expect from a Besson based horn.
Do get a play and return deal before buying ANY horn, though.
Good luck in your search.

At the saturday night performace of the USABTEC Michael Dodd absolutely tore u it up ....and he plays on a sterling. he also uses a JK plexiglass mouthpiece fwiw.
But in all seriousness his sound was great, very warm and resonant. Too bad he does not currently have a solo album, but he does play with Grimethorpe...so if you can find one of their recordings that may be a nice insight to the sound.

Thank you for your comments . It is always good to hear from people who have the experience to know what is good and what is not .
After I wrote this post I researched the archives for preivious threads on this subject. There really does not seem to be a lot love for this particular make. Lots of complaints abot the second slide. That was just from the ones who owned one and do like the horn.!!!!
I love this forum. It is both entertaining and educational at the same time. People here are not shy and will always speak thieir mind !!!!!

The first time I saw a Sterling was in 1995, and frankly, they did not play very well.
However, a lot can happen in 10 years, and the one I checked out in the Exhibit Hall at the TUSABTEC last weekend was light-years ahead of their first efforts. The current Sterling euphonium would be on my list of instruments to check out if I were in the market for a euphonium now.
