No I'm not running out and buying state of the art studio equipment, however my iphone tends to pick up a lot of ambient noise. I'm thinking of a clip on mike near the bell then plugged into my iphone? Just something to get the tuba not, valve clicking, foot taping etc...

I find the two Zoom Products to be superb and the best bang for the buck on the market--the H2n and H4n deliver well above the price tags. I've had the H4n for a few years and wouldn't trade it for anything, and I only use it for probable 40% of what's capable of. Cheaper units didn't seem to pick up the lower wavelengths nearly as well, and the next best costs hundreds more.


Roland's Edirol R-09 comes in at a not too distant 2nd in terms of quality of recording for the price, yet it just doesn't have near the bell's and whistles of an H4n, and I believe is more expensive.

Things might have changed in the last few years since I made my purchase, but that's just my 2 cents.

I also looked at the zoom product line however these seemed more of what I'm looking for either by price or features...
Yes I know the korg is twice the price but its the only one that offers 1bit dsd
Leaning towards the Sony...
My only concern with the Sony is its kinda long in the tooth, released 2009 might be a replacement coming soon...

+1 on the Zoom H4n.

I agree with the Zoom recorder. I have the H2 model which works well for me. If interested, here's a recording of me rehearsing in church with organ accomp. This was only my second solo rehearsal with my new Miraphone 5050 so I was still getting used its intonation tendencies. The Zoom was set about 12 feet away.

If you are looking to record yourself with an iPhone, you won't be able to do it without an audio interface for reasons you have already discovered. It's not really ambient noise, but plain old clipping. Iphone does not have a way to adjust the signal input level. So, you will need something like this - http://www.amazon.com/TASCAM-iXZ-Instru ... I bought one of these so I could use garageband on the iPhone/ipad and do multi track recordings. You can adjust the input level and the recorded sound will actually sound like a tuba. Oh, and you will need a microphone with this. For my purposes, I ended up sending it back for a more robust audio interface. But if you are just recording single tracks, you will be fine. There are also USB mics that have the ability to adjust the recording level - like the Yeti or the blue mics. Or you can go the other route like others have suggested.

Caught the Sony on sale, should be here Friday ill try to post a review with audio when i get a chance.

+2 on the Zoom H4. It picks up tuba very well, to the point where when recording a quintet the tuba will be louder than the trumpets (which is a GOOD thing.)
