Does a single with no dependents, active duty army band musician (e4 specialist, mos 42r) have the option to live on or off base? Will they receive BHA if they live off base?

It is possible to get command approval to live off post if you do not qualify for BAH. However you still won't receive BAH, it just prevents you from having to maintain a barracks room. The only way to receive BAH in the Army is to be a SSG(E6) or have dependants. I'm sure there are/have been exceptions in the past but I am not aware of them.

Yes and no.
It really depends on the base. If there are no quarters available you can get BAH and live off post (I believe red stone is like that). Some bases let E5 and up off post while some like Germany only allow E7 and up to live off post. So there is no single answer for this.

Yep, that's the case at Redstone; we actually have an E-4 living off post. If you're asking from the perspective of thinking about joining the Army, I wouldn't count on it. Probably you'll end up in the 'racks.

Trained to kill and play the tuba.
As long as that's not "trained to kill BY playing the tuba. "

I considered military band for a while, being out of college and not many jobs in sight. I'm not so sure though lol
