Before you guys run out and buy a 'project' YBB-103.... be fully aware that Yamaha no longer makes parts for these horns. Although all three pistons are the same... there aren't any to be had unless you find some used ones. Same with the leadpipe... out of production and the stocks at places where we normally buy parts are gone.

There are no parts from any other horn that will interchange (except for the ones that were re-badged 'Holton').

Great instrument for a smallish student, who has just learned 3-valve fingerings. Also good if a tuba player wants to be in jazz band; a small instrument like that is more appropriate for the trombone 4 part (my son used a 3/4 size Jupiter for that). A bigger and more experienced student who is ready to learn 4-valve fingerings is better served by something like a YBB-321 or similar-size front action horn, in particular if the tuba section is just one student, playing with a 60- or 80-student band (they need a bigger horn to compete with the 20 clarinets and 10 trumpets).

I would like to put my name in the box you keep of folks wanting the next, similar project. I have a 4th grader of my own who really, really wants to play tuba. If I could get an okay one for a few hundred bucks...life would be grand.

In 1995 that was probably Mike Walbridge - he has the same model horn. I started on the band this season, & it's a blast!

I used a 103 outside standing and marching this 17th of may (Norwegian national day)
Hadn't touted one of these for 25-30 years and was surprised what I could do with it.

When I subbed in that Cubs band, the leader did not want me to bring a (standard size) sousaphone. "Too big when we walk around between innings." So he had me play the little 103 whose owner, for whom I was subbing, had left in the band room. Fun little horn.
