Yamaha YBB 103 v 104, any real differences?

I've read a ton of praise for the YBB 103 models however I want to know if other than the placement of the valves, are there really any other differences to the 104 model?

The reason for asking is that a one owner 104 has come into my hands and the owner is thinking of selling (I'll need to come up with a reasonable offer).

I'm looking for something small and compact for times my 5/4 Recording Bell might not be practical in tight spaces or standing.

Just wondering if I should hold out for the infamous 103 or am I not really missing anything with a 104 when compared?

Valves are in great shape, minor dents and bit of lacquer loss. It has not been trashed as an older family acquaintance bought it new in the 80's. It will need a good clean and slides pulled as I think they are welded on, the owner retired from playing about 8 years ago!

Thanks in advance.

The 103 probably builds up more "spit" than the 104 after a while - there are traps in the valve cluster that are a drag to drain. I never owned a 104, but I have played a 103 (and the related 621) for about 30 years (off and on) and I like it, even with this annoying problem.

Top valve action vs. front action is the big difference (and the resulting bell point.)
