Hello! This is somewhat related to Sean's post about getting a composer to write a new piece. These six composers were recommended by more than two Tubenet patrons in the previous topic, so I put them up for a vote.

Which of these composers would you want to write a new concerto? If you vote other, please post and tell us who you would pick. I just want to see if there is any one composer out there who people seem to favor. I have a sinking feeling that "other" will get the majority....but here goes!

I have been thinking about doing a concerto for tuba for a while, even without a commission. It's a big undertaking and I have been a bit lazy lately, doing a lot of easy electronic stuff for commercials. Maybe one day I'll just sit down and get to work. It is difficult for me to get stuff done without a deadline.

Gary Kulesha already wrote a tuba concerto. Another wouldn't be a bad thing, but I'd like to see someone try it for the first time. (Oh yeah, the wind ensemble version was premiered (I think) by Sal, and theres a recording at the CMC. I wonder if he has a recording)

I'm just not a fan of concertos, for any instrument.

Maybe just the name, but it implies something I'm not all that interested in.

How about something that doesn't need a symphoiny in the background?

Boston composer Tim Pence has written me a few pieces, and we're currently collaborating on some ideas for a concerto. His current works for brass:
"In the Monkey Brain" for the Triton Brass Quintet (2003)
*premeired by the TBQ & also performed at the 2004 ABQ Seminar.
"Triple-Architecture Mind-Party" (2004) for Tuba, Elec Guitar & Drums
*premeired at the 2004 ABQ Seminar (recording available)
"Dances for Brassies" (2004); will be premeired this summer by TBQ
"Velvet Omega" (2005)...sequel to TAMP, for Tuba, Horn, Elec Guitar, Elec Bass & Drums.

I vote for Peter Schickele

What about David Maslanka? His son is a euphonium/bass trombone player, and from experience playing several of his symphonies he knows what the tuba is capable of.

I agree with Bloke. I would definitely trust Zwilich with my money. She's written two trumpet concertos, a horn concerto, a trombone concerto, and a bass trombone concerto, so there's no doubt in my mind that she knows how to write for brass. I've listened to three of the concertos above, and they've all been pretty darn good. The horn concerto is my fav so far.

Lots of good ideas going around. Now we just need to pick one....

I started on the first movement last night. I have the first 12 measures orchestrated so far. You guys can commission whomever you see fit, by I have also decided that it is time for me to do this. Because I am producing it myself, I have given myself a one year deadline. The more that I'm out of work the faster it's going to go.

I am recording it as I go along and am trying to produce a realistic performance with my Vienna Symphonic Library. I may be persuaded to post MP3 files of the progress somewhere down the line.
