There's also the idea that, for example, the really small tuba mouthpieces are there for really small tubas.
One of my college roommates (Tabor, again.. lol) had found an old Eb tuba that was the size of a regular euph. We really couldn't tell for sure what key it was just by looking at it, so we taped up some leaks and tried playing it.
At any rate, the standard Conn Helleberg sounded like garbage on the thing, and a Schilke 60 trombone mouthpiece didn't quite play right either. Something in between would have worked much better.
