Well, that audition will find one the top three trumpet players in the world. I wouldn't be surprised if the NYP has as much trouble filling Phil's shoes as Chicago had in filling Bud's.

Wow, no kidding. Glad I'm going to the NY Phil quintet Christmas concert again this year, it'll be his last one!

In one of his interviews, Smith talks about how responsible he feels to play well and how he feels he lets his colleagues down when he doesn't play well. While he seems a rather well balanced fellow, it was clear to me, reading this, that the job at the NY Phil is full of pressure. Smith's front license plate says "splee-ah", the sound of a frack, so it seems he still worries about these things despite his high level of performance. So it's not completely surprising that he might want to escape the grind for a while and do something a little different.
Vacchiano also retired from the NY Phil at 61, although he went on teaching at Juilliard and other places into his nineties.
I wish Phil Smith all the best in "retirement" and hope that now that he's in my area of the country I may get to hear him live. Wow, Doc Severinsen lives 15 miles down the road from me and now Phil is moving in down in Geo-gah.

Is focal dystonia a part of this?

I was told by a friend in the trumpet community that it was. Not sure where he heard it or if it's accurate though.

Thank you. I'd heard it from other sources.

His license plate should be "NY Phil"
