So I just got my first F tuba, a MW182! I love the horn but I'm having trouble finding a mouthpiece I like. I'm currently using a PT65xs and it plays great in the upper register but I hate how it plays and even feels when playing below the staff. It also makes me SUPER sharp.... I've tried using my CC mouthpiece, a canadian brass mb50, and I love the sound and my tuning is much better but I suffer in the high register. I've tried a few other mp's but these are the two that I really like to use. I plan on taking my horn to TMEA this February and spending a lot of time just trying mouthpieces. I'm curious though about what mouthpiece y'all like to use and what you like/dislike about your mouthpiece? And if you happen to know a good compromise between the mouthpieces I'm using right now, that would be appreciated too!

I have an M-W 182 and I use it for a lot of my playing, from symphony to quintet to solo to anything. I use a Yamaha 64 that I have had gold plated. A second choice, would be a JK Exclusive T-8 "B". The Yamaha gives me a really good low register, full, in tune, and loads of low overtones (the APP Pitch Lab on your cell phone has a function to check this). I had my mouthpiece gold plated at Dillon's because it feels more comfortable on my face. If you try one of these and it feels a little small, a Yamaha 65 might also work for you.

But, both of these mouth pieces have smaller rim diameters than your PT 65. A Bobo Solo has about the same rim diameter as a PT 65 but it is considerably more shallow than either a Yamaha 64 or a Yamaha 65. However, on a M-W 2182, Velvet Brown makes wonderful music with a Bobo Solo.

If you run in to a Yamaha dealer at TMEA and he has either a 67C4 or a 67B4, you might try those as they have a similar diameter to a PT-65. JK Exclusive T-5A or T-5AA have deeper cups with about the same rim diameter.
