You should be playing better music. Try working on some vocalise excersizes & more soloistic music. It's hard to get inspired to develop a beautiful sound, just playing bass line parts.

Well I am working on some etudes for semester auditions. So ya. And I have crap loads of music to work on for chamber festival coming in a couple of months.(February). Going to be playing air and boure; so that should be fun.

And tuben; I assume that's a good thing?

And more critique/advice is appreciated as always!

I think we could help you more, if you record yourself playing some of that stuff rather than the bass line stuff.

Well, my i used my iPhone to record it. And sometimes iPhones can't capture the full sound of the tuba.

I'm using a miraphone 187 series Bb 4/4 tuba. And I am using a Schidmt JHDTU mouthpiece(gold color). Why do you ask?

Most of that clip had some distortion ("edge") in the sound- not all of it though, for example the long C notes 2 ledgerlines below the staff, in the passage starting at 1:31 did not. The distortion sounds like you're over-driving something, as an amp cranked up to beyond the speakers' capacity- you don't get any more volume, the sound just breaks up. Since you're playing a Miraphone I doubt that's the cause unless it's in really bad shape.

What you want is the volume capability without the distortion. Listen to recordings of any great tubist and you'll hear what I mean. Those guys can produce all the volume a conductor might want, but their sound when doing so is perfectly clean.

The following is just my humble opinion- I suspect your mouthpiece might be a bad fit for your particular embrochure. Every one of us is a bit different in this area, that's one reason there are so many different mouthpieces. I can't find any dimensional info on your Schmidt, but it looks quite similar to the Conn Hellebergs. The 7B Helleberg has an inside rim diameter of 31.50 mm and the 120S is 32.50 mm (source: http://www.dwerden.com/Mouthpieces/tuba.cfm" target="_blank) and both have a tapering, funnel-shaped cup. You might try something with a larger rim diameter than yours, with a cup that doesn't taper as sharply in the area where your lips are moving, and see how that does.

Thanks for the detailed reply. It could be the mouthpiece. But I'd like to clean up all my fundamentals and embourchure type issues before I go blaming the mouthpiece. PM sent to you.

Obviously you have some sort of ideal and an idea on how you want your sound to be.
You might wanna change that as it doesn't have many applications except
maybe outdoor on a stadium were you want to blend in with 20 sousaphones.

Most times....just loud is just annoying and non rewarding.

Give us some etudes and something that shows your register and don't
try to play so "impressible" loud. That's the tromboneplayers privilege

Got it. And I guess so, I mean, why am I working on a skill that's already well developed. Guess I might as well work on etudes...sigh. I was just trying to clean and better refine my loud dynamics ya know, and figured y'all could help with that.

I just have a question bout it tho, each tuba players sound is different right? Some players have certain flavors and kicks to their sound correct? I ask because these past couple of days I learned that when I start stepping on the pedal a little (FF and beyond), there's a little bit of edge In the sound, and there could be more in it depending on what I want.
