However, some Alto Sax parts are a bit high for basic Alto Horn players, so you might want to try going 8vb.

Even high "c" on alto horn/alto baritone is not too bad...for a bari/euph player (might be bit harder if going directly from tuba to alto...but it doesn't have to be). The fundamentals are the same. : )

It may be that my 70ish year old Alto is not quite as responsive as a new one -
after a decent warmup I can get to the upper register and it is passable sounding.

If I could find an interesting new Alto at a good price I might get one, but my $50 "classic" is ok for most of the playing I do with it.

Wouldn't that be the case only if you were reading TC parts played on tuba? For an Eb Alto Horn, the fingering on an Eb Alto Sax part is read as the same as if you were playing Bb trumpet reading a Bb part ( which is why it is transposed.)

edit - rereading the original post it is not clear if if nycbone knows Bb trumpet fingerings.

My reading is, after the 2nd post, the thread pretty much went out to sea in the dark and rapidly lost any relevance to the question. The answer is "yes."
