There was also a story on CBS Sunday Morning. It dealt with a couple of Tuba Christmases and was just sort of ho-hum with the usual silliness and references to "Oom-Pah." Wish we could get someone to record a really nicely done TC with a proper mike and without the attempt to make us all look kinky or bizarre. I mean, we all aren't kinky or bizarre, are we?

Bill Geist's feature is no different than one that could have been filmed 25 years ago; the perspective he provides on the advancement of the tuba and its repertoire is nil.
OTOH, if Harry Smith, who plays the tuba and is now with NBC, or Charles Osgood, whose features on CBS TV and radio almost without exception have an air of broad knowledge, had submitted the feature about TC, the public would have been exposed to some brief, brilliant tuba solos that would have been totally new and amazing to them--but highly familiar to us as tubists.
Bill Geist's TC feature may not be a step backward for the tuba, but it is certainly a lost opportunity--with apologies to Philip Black and Michael Salzman, who comported themselves and their tubas well.
