Have some questions about a tuba practice mute. I have looked at the Denis Wick and the Schlipf so far. Does anyone have any input about these two, or any others? Tired of having to go into work to practice on the weekends, and tired of lugging a horn to and forth. Thanks.

I have both the Denis Wick (bass tuba) and the Schlipf (contrabass tuba) practice mutes. They are both very good practice mutes. And, they are both expensive. I prefer the Schlipf because it is lighter and does not stick out of the bell as much as the Wick. The Wick makes the tuba very top heavy.

It looks like I’m gonna go with the Schlipf. I now it costs a bunch more, but I like the flat top.

I think that’s the only thing I don’t like about the Schlipf. If I buy an Eb or sell my current horn, I will need a new one. Hmmm, perhaps I should think this through a bit more.

The taylored make is part of what makes them so good. if you sell your horn tack on an extra hundred or so and send it with the horn. When you get a new tuba buy a new mute.

+1 for the Schlipf mute -- it barely sticks out from the top of the bell, and it does a great job of muting the sound. I had one for my Miraphone 1291, and the only reason I didn't buy another for my 188 is that I realized my neighbors didn't care if I practiced without it.

I will also say that the Schlipf also seemed to help me work on articulation and centering notes. I'm not sure how common it is with other mutes, but with the Schlipf, it was quite audible and noticeable when articulations were unclear and when notes were off-center. Even when I could practice "out loud," it was helpful to work on things with the mute.

Are there any even lighter than the Schlipf?

i think these are quite new models, i tried one for f-tuba (fits also the common eb-tuba models) and it's perfect for me! i also tried denis wick and schlipf practice mutes as well as the yamaha silent brass but wasn't very happy with any of them.

the response and intonation of this new wallace mute are excellent! it is light to handle and muting is good, not as silent as "silent brass" but IMO much better than schlipf and denis wick. really worth to have a look on!
