valve set question

One of my dream horns is a large bore 5/6 valve euph. The hardest part to find will probably be the valve set. There are several makers of .590 rotary valves (bass trombone size) and valve sets (Cerveny, Chinese, MW,...) but are there any .590 piston valve sets?

The Willson 2975FA/Marzan has 3 .590 pistons and a .661 I think. I suspect the valve set would be costly but if you could find a beat up one you could rob the valves off of it or just use it for a base to build on. The valves were great on mine.

I found a few Euphoniums that list .590 (15mm) piston valves. (All were top action, compensated 4V design - Not quite what the OP is looking for).

There's also a 1/2 size tuba with this bore size. Unfortunately, it's also top action. It is 3V non-comp if there's a way to re-build the valve block for use on front action, but that's a question for an actual tuba repair guru. I'm not even a repair apprentice.

Have you talked to meinlschmitt at all? I know that there are a lot of small baritone makers here in Germany that make bell front, front action non comp horns. Maybe research some of these horns out here and find out more?

Here you go. Willson did make a 4 valve front action large bore non-comp euphonium, the model 3719. Good luck finding one. Check it out in the body of this topic.

You can get any sort of euphonium you want, with any valveset configuration, bore, and number of valves you want. All that is required is a lot of persistance, time and money.

look for a kanstul G euphonium (not baritone) bugle. Kanstul's are .593 bore. That'll get you 3 valves. You'll need to reconfigure the tubing a bit to put it in Bb and make it work for a front action instrument, but it's doable. Unfortunately, King and Dynasty G euphonium bugles are .570ish. Perhaps you can then look for an older 2-valve small contra bugle for your 4-th and 5th valves and have a progression in bore size from the first three valves.

Yes, I read that thank you. But a bugle valve set might be adaptable, it's a lot closer to a front-action setup than a top-action valve set is. There aren't many donor instruments with that kind of setup. Certainly nothing that's going to be 100% plug and play. It's certainly not something in regular production at Bauerfeind or Willson or any of the other typical piston valve sources. Maybe they've got some old tooling from a discontinued model and will make some for you but it's going to be megabucks. I was trying to provide an option by which he might be able to find a workable set of valves of the right bore that could be adapted for a few hundred $$$.
