I'd say this is a situation where "first do no harm" applies! As one of my conductors puts it, "you can affect the sound of the group in two ways -- you can make it better, or you can make it worse. Don't make it worse."

Yes - if he had laid out, it would have pretty much been just an accordion solo - since nobody else on the front line was playing at all!
It is maybe a bit unfair for the MC to call a tune for the band, but they do have an extensive history - many LPs from The Cletus Goblirsch Band.

Doesn't sound as if that jug band had listened to / cared about / was capable of the source material.
