can't say i have played it, but living in the NYC metro area has it's advantages.....e.g. every thursday night throughout college my friends and I went in to see the Mingus Big Band play and I have heard that piece a few times times and must say you are lucky for getting to play it. I believe I last heard it played by Earl McIntyre.... but think I remember Dave Taylor playing it the first time I heard it.

Mingus was anything but mellow. In Ellington's band, he chased a band-mate around the stand with an axe. There's also a documentary on him from the '60s, where he's smoking a Sherlock-Holmes pipe, showing off his beloved shotgun. He decides to show the cameraman what a cool shootin' iron it is by discharging it through the roof of his NY apartment.

Anything but mellow.

Mellow is a state of mind. You can still be mellow and run around with guns.

I was speaking of his music anyway. It always mellows me out. We also share the same birthday.

I'll pretend I understand that for just a moment. You say running around with a gun can be mellow. I maintain that chasing a colleague around with an axe is NOT mellow.

We differ.
