I will be heading to NOLA for business in a couple of weeks. Are there any bands (w/ tuba or not) or venues I should try to see while I'm there? (I'd prefer local spots and avoid tourist haunts). Thanks guys!

Spotted Cat on Frenchman St.
Find out if the Treme Brass Band is somewhere
Find the Tin Men.
Find Steve Pistorius, Tom McDermott, Tim Laughlin, Tom Saunders, Washboard Chaz.

Snug Harbor.

WWOZ has listings on line, and on the odd hours on the air.

Tuesday nights specifically, Dos Jefes Cigar Bar on Tchopotoulis. Tom Hook and Wendell Brunious.

No tuba likely with all but the first 3 above, but Pistorius might use tuba at Pres Hall in a Saturday Night.

Jon Gross, Matt Perrine, and Tom Saunders are the premiere 3 tuba/Souzie players there, IMO. Tom plays a lot of bass sax, Matt a lot of electric bass.

Within a few days the Louisiana Music Factory will be having their grand opening at the new location on Frenchmen Street (at Decatur.) They always have lots of free live shows, and they have a great selection of traditional NOLA recordings for sale.

He wanted to avoid touristy places... Fritzel ' s, unfortunately, meets the criteria. Even Frenchman St does anymore, but the Spotted Cat and Snug Harbor especially are consistently featuring great bands. Dave, where is the Factory opening? Another place for good music is BMC, right at Decatur and Esplanade. Palm Court Cafe, to me, is a bit hit and miss, but good food and atmosphere and never a "bad" band.
