I was just looking at scholarships for school and was wondering if anyone knew of a scholarship specifically for the purchase of a musical instrument. I know if I got other scholarships I could spend it on my tuba, but wondering about a scholarship for that purpose.

I've been wondering the same thing.

I know that some music departments have instruments that you can use for your initial years of study. Usually something like a CC186. Ask the department wherever you are planning to attend.

The soon to be passed Affordable Tuba Act will require all Americans to have a tuba and provide subsidies for those who can't afford one. You unfortunately don't qualify as you fall in the category of people who already have tubas they like and you will be required to pay more to keep them or give them up and accept lessor quality ones.

My undergrad institution did (does still?) offer a one-time loan for such a thing with slightly-more-favorable terms than the garden variety general purpose student loan. Again though, this was a loan.

My school does have tubas that i can use. Currently i am on a Besson CC and a Mienl wesson F. Currently it isnt in the cards to purchase a tuba, (that is one reason i learned CC is so there would be less competition for the best tubas

Anyway I think i will just wait for the Affordable tuba act to get passed.

Although I do not know of any schools offering scholarships specifically for the purchase of instruments, there are general scholarships that can be used to purchase school supplies (like textbooks). I imagine that if you had enough scholarship money to pay for tuition, you could find a way to label an instrument as a school expense for the use of additional scholarship money.

If you like your tuba can you keep your tuba or will your school force you to buy a more affordable one?

The problem is that - if you ever make it to the front of the line to receive the free tubas, it will be illegal to sell them to other people. So whether or not you LIKE your tuba, you have to KEEP your tuba.

The free affordable tuba act will benefit you only if a member in your 2 person household is pregnant and you make less than 30k a year. (Sorry just some random figures)
