Who gets the blame?
Drillwriter- Sometimes transition sets are compromised in order to make the forms for the impact sets; but intervals, step size and tempo all helped contribute to this misfortune. Be glad you didn't do this to the battery.
Band Director- DId you tell the tubas this is a 'dangerous part' in the drill? ON YOUR TOES BACKING UP!!! Reset...
The Kid Who Started it All- Should have rolled out of the way once he hit the ground. Didn't they practice this (without instruments) at band camp? Also, ON YOUR TOES BACKING UP!!!
I hope none of the kids were hurt.

At above post: well, backwards marching is extremely dangerous if your footing is on point all the time. And the dude who feel...if you watch his body, his weight distribution was off which contributed to his off balance fall. Pretty sure you're supposed to work on this during band camp. The pendulum drill/exercise and the platform raise exercises.

Whoever programmed backwards marching for a souzy is STUPID! All I can say is that my high school band director had us get two pairs of black shoes: a standard "corps-style" for street marching and soccer or football cleats for field marching, and we were told that a field can be very slick. I did exactly that, and I practiced on my own marching and maneuvering on the grass. I still fell once.

fiddlesticks! Backwards shouldn't be tough. Back in the day (when it was uphill both ways, and twice on Sunday), we did a block formation countermarch where the Sousaphone players (in the first row) did not turn around - but simply stepped sideways one step and then started going backwards through the block.
Did I mention that we did this on ice skates?
And...we're not talking fiberglass here. Monster nickel-plated behemoths.
Be afraid...be very afraid.

Marched backward plenty in corps, only fell once. In a practice working 6-5 backwards at around 172-180 bpm, fell forward mangled the bell of my contra pretty bad, thankfully the brass doctor was at that show and we had a spare so all that happened to me was I needed to polish the spare bell in the shower from a deep deep patina up to a mirror shine in far less time than I needed.
The only other time I fell marching was doing a touch and go from a forward march to a backward march on a muddy field, put weight on the front foot (bad form I know) it slipped, I got up. All that happened was I got chewed out by the corps moms for the rest for the rest season for covering my white pants in mud.
