The last time I helped my youngest son with his homework I got a letter from his teacher asking me to please not help my son with his homework.
They were doing a unit on Estimating, he brought home a photocopy of a circle on graph paper, and was asked to find the area of the circle. I showed my son the formula for the area of a circle, when what the teacher wanted was for them to count the squares and estimate the area. It's getting almost impossible to help your kids with homework because they don't give them textbooks anymore so you can't look up how they want the work done.

Getting back to the original topic, the real issue here is how does someone who is well educated (she must have a master's degree or be well on her way to getting one to be teaching in NY) get so dependent on drugs that they would risk their livelihood and betray their employer and the students she is their to help learn, and basically ruin her life. Drugs continue to be one of the biggest issues in our society and they are a contributing factor to the majority of the crimes committed, they tear apart families and ruin lives. I don't know what the answer is but it's pretty easy to spot the problem. The so called war on drugs hasn't worked, but I'm on the fence about legalizing drugs as well. I do support getting help for people who are dependent. This teacher definitely crossed the line and deserves to be punished for the theft of these instruments, and hopefully while the criminal justice system will also get her the counseling and support she needs to beat her addiction problems as well.

It has been my experience that people with severe problems have an undiagnosed medical condition. Undiagnosed because the disorder is not included in medical education, hence the doctors don't know it exists. Most severe conditions, such as those driving a need for drugs to kill physical or emotional pain, can be alleviated if the sufferer has the means to get outside of the allopathic mindset and find out the root cause of the condition. As long as our medical system continues to ignore and deny that problems exist that can be fixed with other than allopathic means, we won't see any end to the suffering of people who are driven to find relief through any means possible.
