What is everyone using in quintet? BBb, CC, EEb, F? particular Brand/models? Somebody start the discussion?

My fave was a sweet conn 2 j. But it's gone now

Well, it depends on the piece of music, but recently I've been using my PT18/MRPF. It has a nice bellowing low register, and a singing high register.

I've also used a Willson 3050, on occasion, but that's a bit excessive. the only thing I've used the Willson on was Amporita Roca.

I use a Miraphone 1281 F. I'd like a slightly easier low Bb-G but it works very well. I also like bass trombone on a lot of things.

My "go to" horn has always been a YCB-621, ever since I got it.

Once in a while I will use an HB-2, a Besson 983 Eb, or even a RM F.

Kanstul Eb works best for me. However, with a "Praise Band" (quintet with electric base, guitar, and drums with singers) the more trombone like sound of the bubbie works better.

Also depends on what the other 4 are playing. I used my Marzan in the Orchestra quintet, who used all large bore orchestral brass. Loved my 184 CC with smaller sounding groups. The 'Phant is right; payer calls the ax. What you'd PREFER is sometimes conflicting...

So interesting choices. I have used a YCB-621, Cerveny CEB-641 EEb, various BBbs and my MW 751s euphonium. I actually liked the euphonium the best. I think that choice gets overlooked. I am personally not a bass trombone fan.

No two quintet pieces are the same, no two tubas are the same, no two players are the same. Some pieces work really well for some players on german rotary Fs, others work really well on piston British Eb tubas.

Personally, I like the EEb in quintet. That might also be because the f tuba that I owned for about a year wasn't a horn I was entirely comfortable on. It also lacked the focus and breadth of sound on some low notes, like Bb and C, which are common in quintet music.

Could it be that you like euphonium more, because you are more comfortable and with that sonority and with the playing of the instrument. For a while, I thought euph was a good choice on 5th voice, but having played tuba and bass bone in enough quintets, euph is a poor substitute, imho.

Actually, really liked the less broad timbre of the euphonium yet still tuba-like even in the pedal range. My quintet members(all degreed) liked it as well. Poor choice? I think not.

Besson 983 Eb, but to be fair, that is the only horn I own. That said, I'd probably still use it for quintets if I had a different horn. The other horn I like in that setting, from my limited experience, is the Yamaha YBB-621.

I think Eb tubas work really well in quintet, taking into account the range and tone quality, not too heavy with the other four players. I have a Boosey & Hawkes Imperial Eb, british compensator. Have used it for close to 30 years now. Often times ranges can get pretty high in quintet literature and I have found it tricky to play accurately up there on BBbs and be nimble and quick. It certainly can be done but it takes a bit more effort on the part of the player.

I swear by the Getzen CB-50. If you don't know, the CB stands for Canadian Brass. It's a 4/4 CC tuba. Canadian Brass used this horn for years, and it has a beautiful quintet sound.

I love using my G50 in quintet, its a great horn for this purpose.

I'm not in a quintet right now, but when I was, my MW2141 EEb worked well.

My favorite in the BBb family is the Meinl Weston HOJO front action tuba.
