Any suggestions for a bass-optimised, clip-on mic for a smartphone-based tuner? I use Cleartune(1) on an Android phone. All phones' mics are optimised for speech so have a very narrow peaky frequency response. As a result, sometimes Cleartune tells me I'm playing the second harmonic. Phones don't provide phantom power either so the mic will have to be passive. There are XLR-smartphone adapters available(2) so I'm just looking for the right mic. Something small, clip on, & flat down to 60Hz (Bb1). Cheers.

It isn't necessarily the phone's fault, if the tuner displays the note an octave above the one you play and hear. The octave may simply be the loudest note in the overtone spectrum.

We determine what note we hear from the overtone pattern rather than from any single partial.

You don't want a clip-on mic, you want a clip-on transducer. It'll work better. Peterson sells one for use with their tuners and/or tuner apps that will work fine with other apps.

By 2nd harmonic I think I might have meant 3rd - didn't realise the fundamental was considered the 1st harmonic, thought it would have been 0 with the octave 1 etc. In any case, the phone is reading a fifth higher than I'm playing (sometimes, especially in the bottom register.)
