I own a denis wick aluminum staight mute model 5518. I am finding that i am using it more and more, both on my bb flat neo on thursday night and on 981 besson ee flat on tuesday night. I would like to get a bag for it. I know denis wick makes a bag for it[DWA106] but the last time i went to my local music store[long and mcquade] here in saskatoon saskatchewan canada i was told by the sale rep that denis wick would not ship to canada. Short of someone fabricating a bag for the mute, what other bags are available?

I bought my mute bag from Donna Altieri. She already has the pattern for the Denis Wick. It is a very nice bag.

Let me suggest a couple of things about this post and the replies.

First, you had to dig a little because the OP writes all in lower case, but he is in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. His question probably was meant to ask where he could get a mute bag in CANADA, because Denis Wick doesn't ship to CANADA. But, I am guessing. Do you know if Donna Altieri ships to Canada? My experience, with Canadian Customs, is quite out of date but it has not gotten any easier to ship there than it was when I lived there, 30 or so years ago. By the time he pays duty, it will be quite expensive, maybe 100% above cost in the United States. And, unlike 90% of Canadians, he does not live within 100 miles of the border.

Second, here's a suggestion. Get an old pair of riding breeches and cut off a leg and sew it shut at the bottom and put a draw string at the top and use that. A pair of jeans may work as well if they are large enough. I have denim bags for carrying stands made this way (both folding music and BBB tuba stands). Fortunately my wife sews and we and the kid wear jeans. My wife also made me a top loading tuba bag out of $2 of out-of-fashion faded graded denim, some lamp wick and some clothes line and a moving blamket. It really works.

Third, if you are stuck with purchasing a mute bag, contact a seller in the U. S, and see if they can get UPS to ship it to Canada, and handle import duties and the like. It won't be cheap but works pretty well.

Finally, this is listed on a Google Search: Tom Lee Music 1330 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3G 0V6. I don't know anything about them but it is in Canada and says it has them. http://dansr.com/wick/find-a-dealer/

Before I got a Wick bag made for my mute (but this was for euphonium mute), I used a gym bag or small duffel bag. I'm pretty sure they have bags big enough for that mute. Something similar to this for $26 USD:

I doubt that they would be any cheaper or easier to find, but I know some folks use djembe bags to carry tuba mutes.

Option 1. Find a duffle bag and line it with foam. Cabelas might have something in the right size.

Or your local military surplus store. I've been carrying my mute in an old US Air Force duffle bag for years, it works fine.
