Well the color of the instrument (black, red, green, etc..) is just a laquer that they apply to the horn. I am sure for it could be done to a tuba, although am not sure why someone would want that.

As for cost...there really is no definite answer...it depends if he plays BBb, CC, F or Eb...and even then you can find horns for a couple of thousand, all the way up to 10, 15 thousand or more.

The closest I have seen is the Hirsbrunner "Stealth" model euphonium.

Of course you could always have any horn custom color lacquered, like this tuba:

but don't expect it to be inexpensive to do.

When I painted my helicon black back in 1967 who knew that it would catch on? (I tell people the black gives it a "darker tone", and some even believe me.)

Uli, have you played a Glassl tuba before? Are they common in Germany?

I saw a shop with a PINK tuba hanging from the ceiling. I think getting your tuba in different colors is a bit strange. I prefer good ol' laquer finish.

If it's the origional laquer (which it probably isn't), then O.K. If it's not, then it's probably been stripped and re-laquerd. I've heard this weakens the brass and effects the sound a good deal.

I've been wondering about that picture. Is it really a shaped bell, or is it just a shaped mesh cover over a regular bell?
