I was talking to a trumpet player recently who sang the praises of using lead tape to fix overtones and get instruments in tune. He had these small bands of lead tape wrapped around certain places on the tubing between valves and a few other areas.

Does anyone have that experience on a tuba and does it actually work?

I've experimented with using lead tape (called 'golfers' tape) with mixed results. Trumpet players are easy to distract!

I used lead tape to cover a small hole in a trombone bell, seems to play ok, so this will do until more permanent repairs can be made. I plan to try self adhesive small lead weights on a bell that plays well but has an over ring on a few notes.

I know for a fact that Steven Mead was putting lead tape on his horn a few years ago and swore that it made a difference, mostly in the very loud dynamics. Don't know if he's still doing it or not.

I wrapped a circle of lead tape around the throat of the two Kelly lexan mouthpieces I have, and it seems to have stabilized the dynamic extremes.

I seem to remember someone here posting where they improved the response of the high 'B' natural on their euphonium by placing a strip of lead tape somewhere inside their bell. Must have been 8 or 10 years ago.

It was ME!

And I put it on the tube before the top bow. Still there and still working.
