I first met Ed in 1980 while on tour. It was in St. Louis and Ed had just won the
U.S. Air Force Band audition. Back in D.C., whenever we got together, it was a
musical or a social pleasure.....most often both.
Ed was also a terrific trad jazz player.
To repeat:
RIP friend.

(Went to THE TUBA SOURCE BOOK for info:)
Teachers:
Don Butterfield
Joe Novotny
John MacNulty
Harvey Phillips
Besides duties with The U.S. Air Force Band and Brass Quintet,
the last time I heard Ed was with a fine Trad Band - The Federal
Jazz Commission.
Earlier, Ed was with the St.Louis Ragtimers and the Delta Queen Steamboat
Jazz Band.
I loved the way Ed could just slide from CC tuba to BBb for jazz.
Wishing all the best to his family.

Was he related to another tubist, Earl Mckee?

I went to college with him. Besides being a wonderful tuba player, he had a fine baritone voice and was a skilled all around musician.
He once performed a set of songs that I’d written in a composition recital at school.
It’s nice to see so many comments about his accomplishments.

The same thing I thought as well. Earl must also be getting way up there in years too, does he still play with High Sierra Jazz Band? I'll never forget eating breakfast with him and the Boys from the band during a Festival and hearing about how his Sousaphone needed a new bell once many years ago because he backed over it accidentally with his Ford Dually F-350
