I bought this euphonium at a Goodwill today. It is complete, but needs new spit valve corks, valve springs, and felts.

I can't see any identifying information except for "16", "17", and "18" stamped on the valve casings. The leadpipe also has "germany" stamped on it.

It appears to have been painted green at some point. It also has a mounting point for a lyre.

that is not green paint, it is verdigris, formed by chemical processes in the brass. it is not a good sign in brass instruments. I would hesitate to spend further money on this instrument

Could be a Weltklang from B&S. Or a Hüttl.

Similar models came from Czech Lignatone, Dutch Schenkelaars, and French Couesnon.

None of them were very good. My interpretation was that their bell throats has been fattened to add breadth to the sound. Sadly ruining the intonation and the distinctness of the sound.

I would posit from the length of the slides that that is actually an Eb Alto (English Tenorhorn).
The bell width would confirm this.

It may also impact the amount you wish to invest on restoration...

Yes, could be an Eb alto as seen from the proportions of the wrap and of the slide loops.

What cheated me was the narrowness of the slides compared to the bell volume. The Schenkelaars altos that were quite common here 50 years ago had fatter tubing:

It is actually green paint and not verdigris- it flakes off cleanly revealing clean brass underneath. I'm well acquainted with verdigris.

If it is in fact an Eb alto, would it be worth my while to fix it? I can do the work myself.

At the very least it can serve as a cool decoration.

The value of the instrument depends on two factors:

the tightness of the valves?

can it be played in tune without skewing the sound?

From my experience, that's no-man's-land...
Altos are often around 8", baritone/euphonia are often around 11".
You might want to try to get a honk on it before you go much further...
