Re: 'Symphony' Sousie ID
Using the Pan American serial number list at the Conn Loyalist which I think is more likely) you get 1937 for 127xxx...
Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

The Loyalist precedes the list with "R. Jones' Conn model number site doesn't give a sousaphone model number index. This is an attempt to construct one."nycbone wrote:Yes, we could certainly round the value up to 24 lbs. The Loyalist weight data are based on Conn literature. My point was that my horn's weight is much closer to a 14K. If it is indeed a 14K, the serial # is not consistent with the Conn or Pan American sequences.
That, and Conn had multiple stencil lines, like Cavalier and Wurlitzer, for example.

nycbone wrote:Interestingly... I found a "64" stamped on the bell collar and see that there was a Pan American 64K... but don't know if the bell collar # is an indicator of model #; my serial # doesn't fit the P.A. sequence for the 64K. There was also a 92K produced from 1936-1938, which would work serial #-wise
One of the troubles with serial numbers is that besides multiple serial number runs for separate lines, the number was for internal identification only. They didn't assign the numbers in the order horns LEFT the factory, just when they were started. So a valve set might be started, set aside in inventory for a few years, and end up in a completely different instrument that merely had the same valve bore. The same is true for bell collars.
Serial number lists, however good, are only BEST ESTIMATES...

Do the Conn bell collar #s indicate the intended horn model #?
On the ones I've seen, anyway.
