Composers will be using this sound in *movie scores.

As long as composers are straying away from this kind of power:

It's too damn hard and takes too much practice to do that crap.

The musicality reminds me of this:

Could live without noise like that ...

But really, probably not too far off. Half of the new movies seem to be about aliens, zombies, robots, or some other sci-fi garbage where the world is gray and bleak and Tom Cruise has to save the world (again). At least the big farty trombones are fun to play.

Movies...

It's just one (unpleasant) sound after another. It's more like a shopping list than a piece of music.

Listen closely. I didn't hear a single split or chipped attack. That is damned impressive at the amperage level they are generating.
Okay, gotta give you that. But that's nearly damning with faint praise, it seems to me.

That may be "impressive" due to the sheer volume, but it still sounds like ****. I dunno why this type of "sound" is becoming more popular with h.s. and college sousa sections. A passing fad I hope. This type of sound used to be frowned upon by band directors and called "'spreading' the sound" or "blatting". But these sousa players today are blatting to the extreme. Reminds me of those guys you see riding around in their low-rider Honda Civics turning their subwoofer speakers up to the max to the point that the car is rattling, as well as the car having loud, buzzy mufflers. :x

IMO, bass trombones and 'french' horns are really the only brass instruments that can get away with the "sizzling bacon" sound (within context) and still sound good. Tubas/sousaphones have a "rattling/broken speaker" sound at that extreme volume, and it usually doesn't sound good. There may be a few instances in orchestra or large ensemble where you'd use a "touch of blat", but it is in FFF tutti sections. 'Edge' is used more often on louder passages, and it isn't the same as full-out 'blatting'. :!:

I'm skeptical of this recording. What I'm envisioning as I listen, aside from 3/8" drill bits entering my eardrums, is one player with at least 2 mics in front of him/her. The attacks, and I do mean attacks, are far too...unison...(not clean, by any means) and pitch is simply too good. Note length is identical too. If this is a section...I don't know what I'll do.

I will amend my comment above...a good editing program is involved, too.

You have to admit the guy has serious lung power. And it's not a section, I think it's 1-2 guys playing. Doubt it's anymore then that. Now I understand it sounds terrible...but in the time we're in this sound is basically what people think about when you mention sousaphone. Loud, harsh, blatty...list goes on. It's fun to play like that though. But no way it's the ideal.

I don't know why you folks are bashing it so hard. I found it rather amusing: the last few notes even brought out a chuckle.

His lows would be powerful if he would work at them less. As they are, they're just overblown and not connected to any musical thought that comes before or after...

But some good things. Let's see. He's loud. There are times when that's all that matters. Few of those times have anything to do with music, but loud can be beneficial, for example if you would otherwise be listening to a helicopter about 30 feet away.

There we go. I think he could also play a nice lyrical passage and sound blissful on it. But we won't know until he uploads a vid of him doing so. Now if can play like this and play gentle and sweet then he is an all around tuba player. Gotta be able to please all audiences.

He could just play actual music instead of this shopping list of notes or some "gentle and sweet" whatever. That would provide plenty of possibilities without having to resort to the false extremes of gentle and sweet, or this.

I believe the late Surgeon General Koop once said playing this way will lead to hemorrhoids.
