I'm in need of a portable tuner and wondered what the wisdom here found to be good for the money

When tuning by yourself, almost any tuner will be good. Phone and tablet tuners are a great way to not have to carry around extra junk.

However, when tuning with a group and others playing at the same time, many tuners zero in on higher instruments first. A tuner with a clip-on contact microphone will make your tuner zero in on your instrument, not someone else's. Korg makes a great wireless clip on/tuner combo, but it's about $100.

There are plenty of mikes out there for tuners with a 1/4" jack input, and clip-on contact mikes with that size plug are easy to find (I like the Korg best). There are a few wired microphones that will work with a phone or tablet. I haven't been able to find any bluetooth contact mikes or contact mikes with Lightning connectors.

I get good results by clipping a Snark SN-8 onto my bell. It's reasonably fast and accurate, very compact, fully chromatic, has a tap metronome and tuning calibration, and doesn't get confused by other players. It's also well under $20 currently. There are a ton of other clip-on tuners out there; just make sure to get a full-chromatic one, not one that's restricted to guitar and bass. Even Peterson makes a clip-on "strobe" tuner, but it's about $70.

Edit: Here's an adapter for using a clip mike with an iPhone or iPad http://thebagpipetuner.com/product/ipho ... e-adapter/. I imagine there's plenty of similar stuff out there for Android and Windows phones and tablets.

Peterson/Iphone works in all sorts of cacophonous environments.
I can get a read with it on my stand with 20 to 80 piece ensemble warming up.
If you really need more equipment BLUE microphones makes a great recording mic for the iphone with a recording program that allows you to set db levels. The mic works in telephone mode, video and tuner...All audio stuff

Its all relative any way, first i play in tune with the other tubas or low instruments then tune with the others however the music is voiced

If a $14.95 tuner should happen to walk away from my music stand, I'd be a little ticked off and out $14.95. If my $700 smart phone/tablet should take a stroll...

I bought the Boss TU12 from Dillon last year $99.00 and its the best tuner I have ever used. Most tuners wont go past pedal C but this will take you down to GGG off the piano. Not sure if it will go lower as I have not tried but the GGG is very clear. The other thing I do like is that is does not pick up overtones like some other tuners. When you play a d it tells you its a d and not an a. It comes with ear plugs and an accessory that allows you to attach it to the bottom of your music stand. I have the android apps but always use the Boss.

Don't be misled by using a clip on mike. In loud ensembles, it will also pick up other instruments. I normally sit next to the trumpets in my concert band and my bell will pick them up.

Another vote for Peterson.
Remember though, tuners are by definition even-tempered,
And to use just-temperament you need to use your ears.

Your ears are the best tuner you have.
Ask someone who sings. Tuners are only for reference.

I personally prefer the Peterson iStroboSoft on my iPhone but I also have the Cleartune app and it has the ability to change temperament settings. It is preset for Equal Temperament but can be easily re-set to any one of about 2 dozen others. Even given that ability, I still think the Peterson is more accurate for my purposes.

Of course. But the stronger signal from your instrument will almost always override them. Sometimes you also have to try several places on your horn to find the spot where the signal is strongest.

And really, you only need your tuner for a few seconds while trying a reference pitch. Your ear is the best judge while playing with the ensemble.
