I have at least 40 American made tubas and not one of them has a lyre screw.
Living in Europe, I can't get the American size screws to fit these and Allied requires membership to order parts from them.

Any recommendations?

Here in Switzerland it was the last day of school, so we are celebrating "Independence Day" too!

Find a hardware store that has thread gauges.
Figure out the thread size, length, and then order box(s) of the right size thumbscrews if they don't have them.

How soon do you need it?
For which instrument in particular?
I can pick out a couple of different sized screws and send it off in a letter to you.
Otherwise you might just try mailing a couple of shops that sell american tubas/sousaphones and ask what they have laying around.
Eh, Tim; you're handy with a torch. Why not just put a new lire holder on?

Even though you cannot order from Allied... do you know exactly what you need? There are generic lyre screws but I some times end up reapping the lrye holders. I've seen some pretty strange thread pitches on those things.

I was going to mention that option, but not having done it -- is the holder body deep enough for the tap to work in place, or do you have to unsolder it anyway?

Use a 'bottoming' tap or just grind the tip off of a spiral pointed hand tap. Retapping a lyre holder on the horn hasn't been a problem for me.

Lyre holder screws from the Allied catalog:
A440 - 8-32 for Olds, Getzen, and many others
A441 - 6-32 for King
A442 - 6-36 for Holton, Bundy, and Bach
A443 - 6-40 for Conn and Blessing
A1690 - 3.5 x .6mm for Yamaha and Evette

The #6 screws are the most irritating because even though the bodies look the same the thread pitches are different.

If you PM me a list of the makers I can order and send to you. Lots (10 or more IIRC) are sold at a further discount.

I can't remember EVER placing an order with Allied for less than $50! Seems like it's more like $200-$300.

I played a concert with a 25J Conn in Innsbruck, Austria which involved 30 mins of marching before the concert.

I only had 5 mins to prepare for the concert and was hoping to look over the music (written in BBb treble clef) but instead went from tuba to tuba looking for screws and realised that none of them had any. Played the parade with the 25J with one hand holding the tuba and the other holding the music. (I don't recommend that to anyone)

I could just put new Swiss lyre holders on them but I'd like to keep them as original as possible.

Could a flute/piccolo wristband lyre be tightened around some tubing?

You MARCHED with a 25J? You're tougher than I thought! I've done a couple of standing gigs with my 36J (same horn but with long stroke front-valves). I taped my flip folder to the bell. It worked in a pinch.
