Building a mute-mic sorta thing(see the video!)

Hey everyone!
I recently found a video of someone who had either built his own mute, or modified an existing mute to include a microphone in the center: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FHg2yqyAvo
I am not a DIY kind of guy, but I really want to make my own mute with this kind of feature. I see that John Manning has a blog post about making a mute on his website, but I don't know how to measure my bell's flare. The mute would be for a Miraphone 1292.
If I go the other route and buy a mute, which should I get? What should I expect and be careful of when I take it apart?
