Very sad to see this. One of the last giants.
He was here in Sweden for the first time already 1957 and did Mahler 2nd with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, "A sensational success for the young conductor" as they said then.

Some of my favorite recordings are ones where he conducted.
Bruckner 8 with Berlin
Feste Romane with Cleveland
Truly a giant in the conducting world. Definitely will be missed.

I know I've seen him conduct at least once, at an NY Phil concert here about a year and a half ago. I might have seen him a few other times, but I can't remember for sure.
Definitely sad news, but his legacy will endure.

I think Maazel's Cleveland period might have been his best. I really like the Prokofiev and Respighi items with Ron Bishop nailing down the tuba parts. Great stuff - what a band!

I really like his Ring Without Words arrangement. It takes the favorite excerpts and makes a large cohesive whole piece out of them. I heard a radio broadcast of him conducting it with the Vienna Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall a year or two ago. I think that was his last performance at Carnegie Hall. Maybe his last with the VPO too?

Rest in peace, Maestro.
