"Old TubeNet was weirdly different--there were a lot of serious players on the boards and there was a lot of extremely frank discussion. Now it's just a couple of deep-South survival nuts talking about ninety-year-old Jumbo sousaphones."

Where are these survival nuts?

The OP there as well as all seven replies were posted "1 year ago" so the enthusiasm apparently had little staying power.
I've seen the "shared hatred" theme happen many times on USENET and web places.
It seems to happen often in the online photography/modeling world. Even when relatively massive amounts of cash are behind them, seldom does that reactionary impetus breed a successful competitor let alone replacement for the hated original. It is a difficult and elusive task to build that critical mass that makes an online "community" work and thankfully negativity has a fairly limited draw.

A sousaphone mouthpiece should work equally well, if you're playing a BBb tuba.

I was just musing yesterday that the discussions on the old tubenet were so much better, had actual intellectual content, and were not dominated by one person who has to have the last say on everything. I've seen it many times that the people I want to actually talk to get overpowered and driven out by the ones with a higher need to dominate. Makes me sad, and I'm basically gone too. Not interested in reading the plethora of posts by the one Domineer on Tubenet.
