Preliminary Audition Music?

Post by J.Harris »

Hi All - I'm going to submit a recording for the U.S. Army Band's "Pershing's Own" tuba vacancy. Anyone know what type of musical examples I should include? Solo works of different genres, jazz/pop arrangements, actual tuba parts from band or orchestra literature? What? And how long should this recording be? Any insider advice Sean? Thanks for your consideration. Jason C. Harris

Literally whatever you sound best on. Accompanied solos at the start of the CD seem to go over well if they are done exceptionally well. Some of the other guys are also looking for some good stuff on CC tuba instead of just a CD full of F tuba playing.

Concentrate on putting together a world class recording of what makes you sound your best while still clearly setting yourself apart musically and technically from all others who send in recordings.

The recording needs to be as professional as possible. If it is not good enough to market and sell in a CD shop then it is likely not going to stand out when we listen to it. We get some GREAT recordings and we also get some HORRID recordings. These are the easy ones to evaluate. If your tape is average then it has a very good chance of not making it. The average or better than average tapes are usually rejected.

Make something spectacular which you would be proud of anyone listening to. If you study privatelly have your teacher listen. If you don't then play it for someone you trust before committing to sending it in.

You have PLENTY of time to work up a FANTASTIC CD between now and April 8.
