I know this has been discussed before, but I also know how this technology can change. I'm looking for a clip on microphone to attach to my Yamaha 621CC to use with a sound system just for amplification purposes. I may also want to use it on a sousaphone at some point. I don't know if it matters if it's wireless. Any new ideas (or old ideas?)

I've had great luck with a floor tom/bass drum condenser. Personally, I drop it down my bell, but I've also seen it clipped on. Both sound terrific...well, except for the moron at the wheel in my case

I'm also looking for a good microphone and thinking of this product: DPA d:vote 4099S.
It's a mini shotgun micro and lot of professionals use it. The same micro is used on string bass etc. just a different holder.
For trombone and trompet it is DPA d:vote 4099T ( higher SPL level 152db possible) but DPA told me that 142db max on 4099S is enough for Tuba. I double on sax so.....

Thanks, guys! Still not sure which one of those DPA's would work best and based on the web site, it's difficult to find a place that sells them and gives a price.

Beta 98 will work.
So will an SM57.
In what setting do you want to use it?

I use an Audix om5 that I put down the sousaphone bell. I have used it at least 100 times without failure. Placing it inside the horn gives you a more covered, darker sound than if the mike were mounted on the bell.

Thanks for all of the good info everyone. I already own some kind of Shure mic that I bought 30 years ago to help Harvey rehearse the Tubachristmas ensemble at Rockefeller Center. He used to use a bull horn and I started bringing an amp and mic for him to use. (It got me special parking privileges too.) After several years, Rockefeller Center started supplying a sound system (and donuts). I never used that mic again for anything. As a matter of fact, Harvey's the only person to have ever used it. I guess it could be destined for tuba use. I'll start there.
