Based on either persons experience on both of these horns. How do these horn compare in

Ease of use:
Is one more open or more stuffy than the other?

Versatility:
Is the Getzen just as versatile as the Rudy? Or does it suffer some serious drawback in certain ensemble settings?

Sound:
Pretty ambiguous... leave up to your opinions.

I haven't owned a Getzen, but my impression from playing a few is that it is a very capable and flexible tuba. For a time David Fedderly used one in the Baltimore Symphony when he needed a 4/4 tuba. I remember it being very open and easy to play.

With a large bell and pistons, it just has a totally different sound, so you will have to decide for yourself there. It is certainly bigger than the Rudy 3/4, but to my ear, I like the Rudy sound better. Frankly, having played my Rudy 4/4 next to an excellent Rudy 3/4, I liked the size of the 4/4 sound better, even if it loses about 5% of the Rudy 3/4 "magic" (how is *that* for subjective!).

My biggest problem with the Getzen is its physical size -- its really short, so the bell is all up in your ear. Personally, I don't like that. MANY people have NO problem with it though.

So... Both good, both different. Personally, I like the Rudy better, but have no real beefs with the Getzen.

My G50 is the only horn i have ever owned and it can do everything you need to do. A very versatile horn.

I couldn't agree more. I have had my Getzen for 4 years now, using it in everything from symphony orchestra to wind symphony to small ensembles. It works great!

At what point in the bugle is the bore being measured?
