How does the Schipf sound compare to the sound of the aluminum Humes & Berg?

I used to have the large 208 and small 206 H&B mutes, but sold the larger one after getting the Schlipf. The 208 was a reasonable fit in the Hirsbrunner 4/4CC that I used to have, but was not good in the larger bell of my 6450.

I still use the 206 in my smaller tubas, and it's "OK" but not wonderful. I had to do quite a bit of adjusting to get it to play in tune, but the Schlipf is more consistent - both from note to note and also across the range.

For me the Schlipf has an even response, and the sound can be made to "bark" if you want. I now love playing the D-Ab in Firebird Infernal Dance as I can play at a good volume with a nice sizzle in the sound - no stuffiness at all :-)

Look into Balu's new hybrid "Sputnik" mute. It does a wonderful job in my Thor and I imagine would do so in any jumbo tuba using the largest size of cork provided. It sounds more like a metal mute than most out there. I haven't heard someone jerry-rig a Wick mute into a BAT, nor a Schlipf straight mute yet, but the Balu's gotta be the best easily available mute in the US right now.
