Hi folks:

I've been told a lot (and verrified some) about the mouthpiece receiver on the Meinl Weston 2000. Well, I own one now, and it's time to fit a mouthpiece, but nothing ever made ever fits.

1) It seams to be larger than the typical Euro shank; if so, what the hell was designed to go in there?!?

2) If not, there's a terrible rumor going around that, much like ancient tubas of yore (Alex, older Miraphones, etc.) the leadpipe goes all the way through the receiver. It doesn't look like that's the case (from outside and in, and feeling with a poker), but I don't want to apply a torch and end up with "NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!"

Anything anyone knows for sure would be appreciated I want to fit my Alex 78 to it (ream out the receiver a bit) but... if id doesn't come off, I'll stick with what I use now.

Is it like an Alex 164 size receiver? Laskey Euro shanks seem fairly huge to me, like they might fit what you've got. Have you tried one of those?

It turns out, after some guidance, I removed it in the standard manner. The venturi is IN the receiver, and it's quite small. I removed it and now it happily accepts my Alex mouthpiece

I have no clue, and I'm glad you figured it out. MW-2000's are REALLY nice tubas (and I love the Manhattan engraving on the ferrules!).

I remember playing a shosti symphony at some point on my 2000 with the original receiver. The way those low louds would just boom out and the way I could just start it and then ride out the rest of the note! It seemed designed to lock in and go.

I played around with mouthpieces. The best seemed to be an American shank swallowed all the way in the receiver. Before I figured that out, I even made the mistake of buying a custom mouthpiece with a bigger than euro shank. That mouthpiece was probably the one I was using for Shosty. I don't know or understand it, but perhaps that mouthpiece accentuated the Venturi. Lockin and sit easy on the cranking machine low whole notes, but not so much on soft or articulate stuff.

I had the reciever replaced with the MW reciever that comes on other MW CC tubas and started using a Euro shank mouthpiece. I liked that set up better, but if I had kept the horn longer, I might have tried installing a 45 slp lead pipe on it.
