If we're thinking of the same Yorks (and I think we are), I wouldn't say they were similar at all to the old brand. They were a lot like Bessons with a little bit different sound mentality.

J.W. York Michigan and York Brass Germany are not related, except that the latter had to buy the rights to use the name of the former in the US. Those tenor horns look similar because...most tenor horns look alike anyway? I mean, they're tenor horns. [slinks away in shame]

The German York Brass brand was named for Yorkshire, UK, which is a hot spot for brass bands. Keilworth had made many parts for the UK Besson instruments, and with Besson in limbo at the time, Keilworth decided to gear up and build complete horns. Not all the parts were made by Keilworth, and some imported parts apparently didn't fit as well as they should, see Tubenet threads. Many York Brass horns were quite good though. We bought and sold a few. I read they sold a lot of instruments, partly because of great prices compared to Besson and Yamaha. Apparently the prices were a bit to low, as they didn't quite make it through the recession.

As well as the fact that the J.W. York & Sons horn on the left is a "short" baritone (complete with 1910 High/Low Pitch loop) and the horn on the right looks like a "York" compensating tenor horn...

I have a newer York 17 " bell Eb tuba. Very satisfactory indeed. It takes a lot to get the sound to break up. I think the Besson breaks up earlier when pushed. Good dense sound with a solid core, projects well. Very good for band work, maybe a little too tubby for orchestra work. Well satisfied with it.

tuben wrote:I'm 6'1" and their BBb Bass (3+1) was the first of that shape/style tuba I could hold and play comfortably as the British originals were apparently designed for a ManBearPig to wrestle with, and ultimately mate.

It also played fantastically, with no fourth valve stuffiness at all.

This made me lol at work, got a few weird looks :D

After the the fincial disaster at Boosey ahwakes The company was acquired by a private equity firm in england. When they had enough they sold Buffet to another this time french PI firm keeping Schrieber Keilworh , Bessson,Nirchal, Witner Paesold and Hofner. Several other parts of the group were sold back to the families that once owned them for 1 euro. Besson whet bankrupt and was sold to Buffet. Th e tooling Keilwrth for production all British factories closed. When an agreement couldnt be made Buffet contracted with Minel to make their besson line. At that time The Music group began to maufacture YORK an name that they owned . (Carl Fischer publishing the majority ownr of Boosey and hawkes had owned the YORK brand since the 50's) The york brand was included in the complex sale and purchase of carl fischer by The family. ( fischer also owned RICO)
There was much bad blood between the Buffet and music group teams so TMG stared making and Marketing the York line using the former Boosey management team.
Shrieber Keilwerth eventually was bankrupeted and reunited with the rest of the former group and York production ended.

Can you clean that up a bit and put it on a timeline of sorts?

So... who owned the name 'York' at the time the York 'Master' tubas were produced in Germany by Bohm & Meinl? Who owned the 'York' name during the time Walter Nirschl was having the 'York-Nirschl' tubas by Bohm & Meinl?

Seems like there was a lot of obscure stuff going on in Europe during the 60's and 70's.

I suspect EVERYTHING that bears the name 'York' today is rebadged JinBao, et al stuff.
