I'd like to compile a list of the tuba audition solos/etudes for all-state or regional honor groups throughout the United States. What are some of the past or present requirements for these bands/orchestras? For instance, I know that the Haddad suite was required for the California All-State Band this year. Any help will be greatly appreciated!!

In NY, students who would like to audition for All-State choose any solo in the NYSSMA manual listed as a level 6. In this level you have music of a fairly wide range of difficulty. However, adjudicators cannot consider if a piece is an easy or difficult level 6. They are supposed to judge the quality of the performance of the student on the selected piece. With various pieces being played around the State, at various locations, on various weekends in the Spring, with different adjudicator's, the process can perhaps be considered not the ideal situation when trying to select 11 tuba students to participate in the All-State ensembles. I like the idea of one solo being selected by a committee to be the All-State audition solo for the year. At least, it eliminates one variable in the process. Ideally, one solo selection should be used, where all applicants to audition for All-State play the same weekend, at the same site, for the same judges. I realize that this is impractical in a state the size of NY and other larger states. The Haddad Suite, mentioned in an earlier post, is a level 5 in the NY NYSSMA manual, so it could not be used in an All-State audition. Some of more popular pieces that I've seen being performed in NY for All-State are: Sonata in A Minor - Vivaldi/Morris; Second Concerto, mvt.I - Ernest Williams; Concerto in One Mvt. - Lebedev; Ballad of Enob Mort - David Uber. Those are some of the more "playable" level 6's. Of course, some of the more advanced students do perform the VW, Gregson and Hindemith.

When I was in high school both Nor Cal and CA All State asked for Presser's second sonatina. I don't remember what they asked for my junior year though...
