GW Mouthpieces

Hi All,
Just wanted to share what has been happening in the past 3 weeks. I've been working on a new mouthpiece with Ivan and Bob at GW Mouthpieces for the past 3 weeks. In this short amount of time, we've come up with what I consider the best mouthpiece that I've ever played on. This is MUCH different than what GW has been producing in the past. This is a light weight Stainless piece the has incredible centering power from top to bottom and a sound like I've never heard before. The stainless allows the player to play at extreme loud dynamics without the sound breaking up and because of the design of the piece and the alloy, the bore can be slightly smaller to allow for the extreme softs too. They've also used one of my all time favorite rims, the Miraphone C4. It has a great comfortable feel that I can play on all day yet has a relatively sharp bite to make the articulation clean as a whistle. I've had great luck with this piece in my Gronitz as well as my 1291's. Ivan and Bob have been great to work with. They are folks that really listen to what I need in a mouthpiece, and their service has been the fastest I've seen. We will be creating a new F tuba piece to go along with the new C tuba piece some time this month.
From what I've been told the C tuba piece will go into production probably this month.

The mouthpiece we made for Alan has a 1.295 Rim, and a .321 throat.

Alan requested a mouthpiece that he could play low, high, articulate, melodic, loud, and soft with ease, and comfort (

basically everything and the kitchen sink!!!) The mouthpiece is a combination of ideas. Take a look, Tubenet enthusiasts will be the first in the tuba community to see the new mouthpiece.

Looks neat but I think I'll stick with the Bayamo. What kind of credentials does Alan have anyway?

Seriously. The C4 has also been a favorite of mine over the years, but I find it to be a little small for a BAT. To me this thing looks like a good choice for F tuba.

It seems that G&W are starting a trend. I visited Dave Houser's website and note that he's planning stainless mouthpieces also:

just as a clarification,
the new CC tuba piece has a C4 RIM not the cup.... it works great in the big horns especially....

a suggestion to the GW folks or just one of their many, MANY avid enthusiasts: why doesn't someone put out a comparative mouthpiece chart with all the GW models. it'd be informative to see how they all stack up in size with the old stand-by's like mira C4 or a PT50/36/88

Houser was actually first, as far as I know...

I have seen a few of them and the guys is MJT were playing on them as far back as 2001 or 2002.

Very high quality stuff!

If I'm not mistaken, Anton Paar's titanium mouthpieces are available with TiN coating ... haven't heard of anyone applying it to a stainless steel mouthpiece yet.

We have all kinds of new things happening.

First the new Alan Baer mouthpiece. We are currently taking pre-orders, and plan to have the mouthpiece in full production and ready to ship by Friday April 22, 2005. The Alan Baer signature model mouthpiece will have an introductory price of $165 each plus shipping and handling.

The numbers are there on the site to compare, but there are enough differences that the only comparison left is by the numbers. If you know the specs of your mouthpiece, you can get a G&W that's close in size.

PT50 is about equivalent to a Bayamo size-wise, with a barely smaller throat (if I remember correctly).
