I have a little horn work to do on on couple of horns (one helicon and one euphonium). (Soldering, cleaning, unsticking slides, valve realignment, etc.) My go to tech, who was at Cadensa Music in St. Paul, is not longer there. I'm shopping around for someone else who is good. I know Lee Stofer is not that far away. I have used him for larger stuff. He is really good. He is a bit far away. I'll go to him if I have to, but I thought I would try a little closer first. Any suggestions?

When I lived in the area (late 90's), Eric Peterson did amazing work and everyone I knew took their high end horns to him. He did a very nice taper on my Alex lead pipe for me. Damn good work. Very nice guy. No regrets.

That's all I got.

I hear good things about the techs at Schmitt Music but have never been there. The only work I've needed since I got here was done at Eckroth, in Roseville. The treated me well, but I don't know that I can give a full recommendation as this was a very minor repair. I need to have some work done on my 983 so I may start with Eckroth and see how they do.

This is a little late but Eric Peterson is still doing remarkable work. Laurel Chapman has also set up a shop in S Mpls. Haas in New Brighton does good General work, if you aren't looking for high end stuff.

Do you have contact info for Eric Peterson? You can PM me if you like, just want to have it on hand!

I have used Davenport music. They are competent and economical. I would recommend them.

Would you be able to tell me more about Haas please? I'm not familiar with them, but they are just down the road from me, which excites me a bit.

The only contact information I have for Eric is an email address, tuuba@comcast.net" target="_blank, but I'm sure he's in the phone book. If I recall he's listed by name, followed my "music inst repair".

Haas is a small, full-service shop. They do good General work, I just would prefer not to take my main tubas to them, just because I'm so comfortable with Eric and Laurel. They also have an excellent string guy, and Marcel does marvelous (and quick) work with woodwinds. I've taken my sousaphone there in the past, and they do an economy overhaul, where they will pound out the major dents and relaquer for $500.00.

If you're willing to put in some hours & miles on the road, Merlin Grady in Waterloo, IA is very good (he's a low brass guy himself, too) and would be a few hours closer to your location than driving to Lee Stofer. I know that Lee does beautiful work, but I would also not hesitate to take anything to Merlin Grady.

I've had very good luck working with Dennis Pollard of Davenport Music (who is also the tech for Schmitt Music in Brooklyn Center). He is a tuba player himself, so he understands our needs.

(763) 566-4560 and ask for the repair shop.
