Mack 410 CC in quintet

Is anyone using a Mack 410 CC in quintet? I would really like some info on how it works in that setting.

Hi-
I've used a 410 in that setting and it is excellent. I prefer F tuba, but the 410's are so in tune and flexible they work excellent in that grouping.
I must say--the *"410's" don't get 'as much love' as they should.....you can not go wrong on those horns....great intonation, easy to play in all ranges, nice sound....for a very small amount of money....everyone who needs a 4/4 CC should consider one...great horns at a great price...go play some...

*- whether Baltimore Brass, Dillon, Mack, Schiller, Tuba Exchange, TubaMM, Wessex, etc.--they all carry the 410 CC....and these horns are available in unlacquered brass (special order-Wessex), lacquer, gold brass bell (Mack), & silver plate....

I too use a Mack 410 in quintet and a n the tuba quartet I play in. I completely agree with the comments made on the post above. A great horn for the money.

I have.
A C4 type of mouthpiece works well for quintet use on this tuba. Since this horn plays a little darker than the "original" a deeper mouthpiece may not be ideal for quintets.

I am curious if it is a great horn on not? Why add "for the money"? I am asking in a very gentle with a very friendly tone. I am not trying to provoke you.

Yes, it is a good horn for quintet. And, it's good for almost anything else, IMHO. Aside from the fact that it is a great horn "for the money", it is a really great tuba compared to tubas that cost up to
four times as much. It is amazing that a quality 4/4 five-rotor CC tuba like this can be obtained for around $2,000. Doubters wont know until they actually try the 410; then, they may kick themselves that they spent $8,000 or more for their 4/4 five-valve CC tuba. By the way, I think the build on the 410 is very strong and heavy, even suitable as a middle school instrument.

I have the Wessex equivalent. Blends very well in a quintet and the high notes slot so easily. I can also open up and play quite broad with organ. Great horn, solid construction, great price.

Closest thing is finding quintets with a tuba player playing a Mira 186. Problem is, mic placement is absolutely EVERYTHING in a recording. Plus, a player will sound like herself no matter what the tuba (for the most part, of course).

I do not need a precisely balanced recording, just would like to see and hear the instrument in this setting.

I'm trying to get a recording from the organist at last Sunday's concert where I played my new Wessex Miraclone in a quintet. I may not be the best representation of the instrument (due to the limitations of the player), but hopefully it'll give some indication of the balance/blend it is capable of.

Here is a Mack 410. The quintet played last night at the Kennedy Center, right across the street from the Army Band Tuba Euphonium Conference. They played Ewazen's Colchester Fantasy. It starts at 31:40. The video starts out with a euphonium/marimba duet by Adler.
We're looking forward to the conference today.

I very much liked the 5th valve on my 184 being 2+3. I may get one of the 410s in the reasonably near future, and was wondering what it would cost to have a 2+3 slide for it, and if any other mods would be necessary.
