Hey guys,one question about the repertoire for applying in Symphony orchestra and Philharmonic auditions. I am applying for audition at orchestra in which I am going to be the second tuba player for it's entire history(the first one is going to retire). The audition requires the first movement of R.V. Williams Tuba Concerto and the second movement of R.Strauss Horn Concerto in Es-major. I had meeting with the director of the orchestra and told her that Williams is the standard piece,but I have never heard about playing only second movement of Strauss concerto. Does anyone have any PDF file of requirements for audition for tuba position? I need few samples of audition list.

Get the horn part for Eb and just play as written by adding 3 flats to the key.

As to the excerpts, look at the audition section of the board to get an idea of what's required at Symphony auditions. There are about 20 to 30 excertps that are pretty standard and are a must for any symphony audition.

Tha orchestra solos are mostly the standard ones(Wagner,Respighi,Tchaikovsky,Mahler,Stravinsky,Bruckner etc.), but the problem is that musicians here don't know lot about tuba solo repertoire. So I was asked to search for some other audition requirements from orchestras arround the world so they can compare them and make one for this orchestra. Any PDF or just suggestions would be great.

If I'm not mistaken, the 2003 New York Philharmonic tuba audition used the Strauss Horn Concerto as the solo.

Ted Cox transcribed it for bass clef, not sure if it's in print but I'm pretty sure that it was the version they used. The Eb TC version for horn is easy enough to transpose, as others have said.

Aside from the standard excerpts (both solo and with section) that are on just about every audition, the solo work part of the audition is not really standardized. I've seen RVW required. I've seen Strauss required. I've seen Kraft required. But most auditions allow you to choose the solo you wish because the important part is showing what kind of musician you are. In this particular case, the part I find unusual is that they are requiring 2 different solos. I've never seen that before. To be honest, it's a bit of a bargain because in the case of requiring RVW, that is a 3 movement work. Since the committee could ask for any part of it, having all 3 movements ready is required. In this case, you're only being asked to prepare 2 movements. If it were me, I'd give them exactly what they asked for (played as well as I could play it) and wait to school them on proper tuba audition lists until after I had the job. Good luck!
