That is really neat. His prices seem really reasonable as well. Barry Bales of Alison Krauss/Union Station uses one and those guys rock.

I played a gig with a traveling bass player from Canada who played one of those. He said Canadians who have to fly to gigs have no choice because no airlines that serve Canada will allow bass trunks as baggage.

In the US, Southwest accepts trunks under 100 lbs for a relatively small fee. The other airlines either won't take it at all or charge much more.

Since the case it drops into seems so thin, I think putting that case in an Anvil style box still would be a safer bet for most airlines. They really just don't care!

My band will be flying to Cuba for a week long tour in a few weeks - the airline charges for our oversize and heavy instruments are a major part of the tour costs. At least we all share the excess baggage charges equally!

Curmudgeon wrote:Miraphone did something like it for Oystein Badsvik. The bell on his tuba has two collars and nests in itself and the paddle bridge folds down. Whole thing fits in a flat case.

This has been discussed extensively on the double bass side of talkbass.com . Reviews are mixed. I'm concerned about the strings unravelling in the peg box.
