Martin Mammoth - mouthpiece?

First of all, I'm new to tuba-land. That said, I realize mouthpiece selection is largely subjective but.... do the Martin Mammoth owners here have any specific recommendations or suggestions regarding mouthpieces for that particular instrument? Thanks to all.

I find that a Curry 128DH is my personal favorite on the big Martins, (and big Martins are the only type of tuba that I play! ). Very subjective, as you say - just my opinion.

Welcome to TubeNet- and I like your name!

Paul makes a good point- what works for one person may not suit another. Every player is different, so is every horn.

There are several excellent music stores that will let you try different mouthpieces. On the East Coast, for example, we have Dillon Music (Woodbridge, NJ) and Baltimore Brass (Catonsville, MD, just outside Baltimore). You don't say where you are located, but if you live near one of these you should take your horn and try some different ones.

I'm in Colorado, with a good shop for higher brass but not a lot in on hand in the tuba dept. Perhaps they can order something on a trial basis; many shops allow online ordering with return privileges so I will somehow mange to try a couple things. Given that trying multiple mouthpieces back-to-back won't happen, I thought it might be a good idea to get some input from those in the know to help narrow the search.

Heavy Metal - thanks for the compliment on the name. It was a nod to some friends who are in high-end audio design and construction. They use 24 inch subwoofers in many of their systems. I had them scratching their collective heads when I told them I had just acquired a "24 inch pneumatic subwoofer" and would bring it around someday for their inspection. They got quite a chuckle.

Again, thanks to all and to all a good night. :tuba:

Grateful for additional ideas from other Mammoth owners.

Another option is the Wick 1L mouthpiece. It also seems to work very well with the Martin.

I have had very good results using a Stofer-Geib mouthpiece, and took care to make sure the Martin bits fit well and tighten sufficiently.

I also have a Martin tuba mouthpiece here, an interesting variation with a black plastic screw rim and upper bowl. I might be persuaded to part with it . . . . .

I have found a medium funnel to work well on the early model I had - Conn 2, Helleberg 7b, Floyd Cooley Helleberg, Blokepiece Imperial.
Anything too deep risks losing focus, and my Martin didn't seem to like the shallow bowl that can sometimes work on a European Kaisertuba.
