Well, I'm considering going this year. Any advice on where to stay and what to do?

I am planning on going down for Saturday at least. We should plan on having a Tubenet meet up at some point. Go out for dinner and a cold one. It would be fun to meet you guys and put a name to a face.

I'm playing in Baltimore that week and thinking of driving over. I havnt found an event schedule yet, does anyone have one to share?

I went for 6 or 7 years in a row when I lived in NY. I probably would've gone for a longer period, except that for being a band director and having a school jazz festival the same weekend, I could never get away. I always loved the event and I usually went alone.

If you plan to attend, I highly recommend that you have access to a car, or you travel with someone who has one. I always drove down from NYC (LI), but if you fly in and don't have a car, it means you have to rely on somebody else to get around because the closest hotel in walking distance must be near 05. - 1 miles. Also, there's no place half decent to eat on the army base. I haven't gone since I moved to Texas , but I plan to go back some year. It is a great event, and well organized. My sister is visiting at that time this year, so I know I'm not going to the Workshop. I always stayed at the Courtyard Marriott in Rosslyn, which is a small city adjacent to Arlington. It's only a few miles away. It costs more than the Embassy Suites, but you won't hear tuba music in the middle of the night.

Have a car, a GPS, a hotel reservation and visit the Dogfishhead Ale house, which is nearby.

Well, the room is booked, and the wife has decided to go with me. Her reasons for going? 1) to make sure I don't get into trouble, and 2) to work in another mini vacation. I'll probably take 3 mouthpieces (small and large shank trombone and 1 tuba) and try some things out, hit a few classes and see a few concerts. With the wife in tow, eating, drinking, and a trip to the Smithsonian will be worked in. Good times will be had.

I have had good luck staying at the Virginian and eating at the Quarterdeck. From there it is about a 30 minute walk up to Brucker Hall.

Just made a reservation at the Virginian Suites. Conference rate for returning customer $125 per night avg.

I will be attending again this year, along with the "Resident Genius." I believe it would be really cool if TubeNet people would identify themselves. It would be nice to meet other members of the TNFJ(LOL).

The Americana Hotel in Arlington is 2.3 miles from the Hatfield gate, and $78 per night thru Travelocity.
That seems like a lot until you check the local competition.
I have not stayed there before, but it can't be worse than the Days Inn.

I'd stay there just due to it's cool signage!!

Ditto on the nametags and get-together.

Another possibility. Haven't stayed at this one, but this small chain's property in Falls Church was very nice even through the rooms were on the small side.

Instead of name tags why not bring a finger button as a challenge coin.
Maybe a bloke button could be used.

If my old truck don't break down, I'll be headed to the conference this year. I'll be easy to notice.

I'm planning to drive down Friday, try a few different mp, a horn or two. If there is a dinner get together, I'd be interested in meeting a few fellow "TubeNetters".

I look forward to seeing the usual cast of suspects there, and meet some newcomers as well. The range and quality of concerts, master classes, clinics, etc., make it a real deal for anyone who can get there, and since it is on a Federal Installation there is no admission cost. I would suggest that if you drive, consider that your vehicle will most likely be searched when you enter unless you have a military base sticker. I show them my military (retired) ID, and sometimes my vehicle is searched, sometimes not.

If you fly in, the Carlson at (near) Reagan Nat'l. Airport is reasonable, has a free shuttle to/from airport, and is within about 3 miles of Joint Base Myer/Henderson.

Chris Hite and I will be manning the booth, which should be the same place as usual. I plan to bring an abbreviated play-condition shop with me, so if you arrive with a damaged instrument, feel free to stop by and I'll do what I can. I plan to have a mouthpiece sale of major proportions with close-out prices on a variety of makes and sizes.

There will be several pre-owned instruments for sale, ranging from 5 years old to antiquity, and I'll have a restoration there that you'll want to check out, a 7-foot-tall H.N. White BBb tuba with two leadpipes. This belongs to a prominent collector and is not for sale, but will be on display. The collector will also be there, and this will be the first time he sees it since it was dark, dirty and dented. A photo of this instrument when new in about 1927 can be found by searching "Joe Tarto" on the web.
