Modifications

Post by Kevin_Iaquinto »

Would it be possible, in the near future, to enlarge the bore of my 4th valve, make my 5th larger, move my 5th valve (which goes into my 1st valve), and make my lead pipe shortened and go directly into my valve block, instead of my open tuning slide.

Question, what benefits would having my lead pipe shortened and put directly into the valve block.
How much would this cost and how long would it take. If possible it would be within the next 5-6 years.

Would I have to purchase a new 5th valve or can a rotor get scooped out, same goes with my 4th valve, can it be increased from .788 inches to .803 Could I make my rotor go from .788 inches to .835 inches?

It might be much easier and less expensive to just sell what you have and buy what you want.

Just wanted to know if it was possible. I'll just leave my horn as is and wait.

I'm still in high school, just had this idea pop into my head; I have an expensive imagination...

I'll be at NAMM next week, maybe something there will captivate me.

I played quite a few horns before picking my Kalison. The 1293 is a tiny horn IMHO, but it had the best response that I had ever experienced. It was pretty high on the list, just under the 291 Bruckner, but my budget was far too small for one of those horns. I ended up going with the Kalison because of the price.

The Kalison is still an amazing horn, especially after getting it ultrasonically washed and putting some bloke washers on it.

Anything is possible with enough money...
Despite the fact that this would be extremely difficult,I wonder if it is actually possible.

First you'd have to drill out the ports of the valve and install new tubing inside the valve (would it fit, would the valve support ports that are larger.) ( wouldn't most valve makers make valves as small as they can (reducing friction, reducing manufacturing costs(materials) etc.)

Then you'd have to unsolder all the current branches, create new knuckles and solder tubing of a larger bore. Lastly you'd have to make sure that the bore after this valve expands to reach the new 5th valve. (i.e. new tapered tubing)

*It would be easier to graft a larger 4th valve on the valve section.

Honestly, and this may sound insulting, but you're trying to put Mags on a Geo Metro... When I was a teenager, the first of friends with cars ended up with a Geo Metro (or other equivalent cars). Many of them put in custom radios/stereo/subwoofers... the whole nine yards. These guys would go the shops and buy parts to "pimp" out their cars. New steering wheel cover, new dashboard LED lights, customs race car type pedals...etc)

To me that defies the point of Geo Metro... (i.e a small, inexpensive, fuel efficient car.) If you want a porsche, get a porsche, if you want a geo metro, get a geo metro...

So If you want a Thor, get a Thor.* (Etc, etc) If you want a Kalison get a Kalison....

*I know you were hinting at Miraphone bores, but the idea is the same.

  • People have lots of fun with this kind of thing, it's only stupid if you do it with stupid expectations.
  • To me, a Kalison isn't in anything like the Geo Metro equivalent category. It's desirable and unusual enough that people who have one and aren't satisfied with it should sell it. (But not to me, unless you have one that's super beat.)

1 That's what I was going for (stupid expectations). Maybe Mags were not the best example (as they're sort of the equivalent of valvecaps) (Maybe a turbo and a cold-air intake would make a better parallel)

2Valid point, I recognize that the Kalison is not a Geo Metro. I also didn't directly say that a Kalison was Equivalent to a Geo Metro... It's just that the OPs crazy plans reminded me of these teens I knew who had Geo Metros and hoped they be Eclipses or Civics (etc)... I just think that modifying a Kalison is as counterproductive(With the OPs proposed modifications) as modifying a Geo Metro.
